The Race for Reading 2009
The third annual "Race for Reading" will be held Saturday, May 2, 2009 from
2:30 to 5:30 pm at The Renaissance Battle House Hotel. All proceeds will benefit GRCMA-Early Childhood Directions, a United Way partner agency.
A fast paced Kentucky Derby Party with a buffet, live music, live auctions, and mint juleps will add to
the excitement of the races. Guests are invited to take part in Derby Day tradition by wearing beautiful
and festive hats.
Proceeds from the "Race for Reading" support services for children. GRCMA Early Childhood Directions in cooperation
with Jean Dean Reading is Fundamental Foundation is celebrating 8 years of putting books into the hands and homes
of children. We encourage and motivate children to be lifelong learners, and we train caring adults to transform
children into readers and book lovers. Each year, 4000 preschool children in our area receive books through
this early literacy initiative.
Another component of the project assists families experiences severe crisis with temporary scholarships for their
preschool children to attend childcare programs. These opportunities to participate in high quality early childhood
programs enrich the life of the children while supporting deserving families during a difficult time.
Funds raised at the "Race for Reading" will allow us to continue to purchase books, provide scholarships,
and engage families in reading. Anyone interested in helping with donations of cash, items for the silent auction,
